After about two centuries of commercial exchanges with the Chinese Empire and the establishment of a Swiss Trading Agency in Shanghai in 1912, Switzerland was one of the first western country to formally recognize the government of People’s Republic of China. Born on October, 1 1949, the People’s Republic of China was recognized by Switzerland on September, 14 1950, recognition which was a natural consequence of the Treaty of Friendship between the two countries signed in 1918.
Today, the People’s Republic of China is one of the main partners of Switzerland in Asia and the range of contacts is rapidly growing and broadening: from politics, commerce, migration, science and technology, to education, environment, health, tourism and, last but not least, culture.
